While adding herbs and spices to food definitely gives it an upgrade as far as taste is concerned, spices can also add health benefits as well. In my book 10 Herbs and Spices to Aid Weight Loss I highlight 10 common herbs and spices that can have an immense impact on the ability to effectively manage weight. Some spices are thermogenic is nature, meaning that they serve to boost the body’s metabolic rate naturally, while others help to block the formulation of fat cells, which can reduce the amount of fat the body is capable of storing. The truth is that there are a number of naturopathic or homeopathic modalities that can be used to reach and sustain the proper body weight. Naturopathic forms of metabolic regulation range from herbs like ginseng to spices, such as black pepper and cayenne pepper.

  1. Ginseng is valued for its ability to boost energy, subsequently boosting the metabolism in the process.
  2. Capsaicin, which is the active ingredient in cayenne pepper has been scientifically proven to reduce caloric intake, shrink fat tissue, and lower blood fat levels.
  3. Cinnamon has the potential to boost the body’s metabolic rate, and it has also been proven to help lower blood glucose levels, making it an ideal spice for people who suffer with diabetes.
  4. Black Pepper contains a substance known as piperine, which is responsible for the flavor it provides; however, piperine also has the capacity to block the formation of new fat cells, as well as boost the body’s metabolic rate.

Take a look at what Angela Selerno, Publisher and Editor for INH Health Watch, has to say about the impact that pepper can have on weight loss efforts.

There’s a simple, natural way to lose weight. It doesn’t require strenuous exercise or a drastic change in your diet. And it’s probably sitting on your dining room table right now.

Piperine is the compound that gives black pepper its characteristic pungent flavor. Here’s how it works to make you thinner:

1. Reduces Belly Fat

Eating black pepper cuts belly fat over time, researchers have found. Mice fed a small daily dose of piperine lost weight and fat. And that was despite being on a high-calorie diet.

The mice also had lower levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) and more HDL (the good kind). So black pepper had the added benefit of lowering risk of heart disease and stroke.

In a similar study published in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, scientists fed mice high-sugar and high-fat foods. When they added black pepper to their diet, visceral fat decreased significantly. That’s the most dangerous kind of fat that accumulates around the midsection.

2. Prevents New Fat Formation

Piperine keeps new fat cells from forming. A study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reveals it inhibits genes that build body fat. The findings were so promising researchers called piperine a “potential treatment for obesity-related diseases.”

3. Boosts Metabolism

Black pepper is a thermogenic spice. It stimulates your metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories—and fat. This is likely due to its spicy flavor. Foods that deliver a kick to your tongue can increase your metabolic rate by up to 20% within minutes of eating them.

There’s evidence black pepper also reduces symptoms of human metabolic syndrome—a group of factors that raises risk of diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.

But here’s the thing… Black pepper only contains 5% to 9% piperine. So you get just a small amount from sprinkling it on your meals.

To get a therapeutic dose, take a supplement with black pepper seed extract. Look for one that gives you 15 mg a day. But even still, don’t hold back when adding black pepper to your food. Scientists believe the sensory experience it provides boosts its thermogenic qualities. This helps keep fat in check.
