5 Reasons Why You May be Struggling to Lose Weight

Weight Loss WomanAs more people become aware of the health-related issues associated with obesity, the nation is experiencing a rise in the number of people who are attempting to lose weight. Unfortunately, there are far too many people who are not achieving the level of success they desire as far as weight loss is concerned. Honestly, there are multitudinous causes of failure to achieve optimal weight-loss goals, but this article will focus on some of the more common issues that people run into.

Weight loss is a simple concept, at least in the basic formula. Theoretically, all a person has to do in order to lose weight is to place their body in a caloric deficit. This means that the body is burning more calories than it is consuming. According to the Mayo Clinic, the general rule of thumb is that a person will lose one pound of fat for every 3,000 calories they are in deficit. As simple as that may sound, there are a number of manageable impediments that can hinder optimal results.

Impatience

The microwave culture in which we live has created unrealistic expectations concerning weight loss. Older diet models had longer time tables, but since most people are in search of instant gratification, many unsustainable diet fads and exercise programs have popped up. There are a significant number of people who simply become frustrated and give up before the program that they are on has the time to prove itself effective. Being impatient never has benefited anybody when it comes to fitness. The most efficacious formula is perseverance and hard work. Working out and sweating for a week will not get rid of the excess weight that you have put on over a number of years. Have faith in your program and nutritional plan and you will see results in time.

Cheating

Lose Weight NowCheating applies to both, your nutrition and workout programs. When performing your workout plan, do not cheat your way through your workout. Follow strict form and make sure that you follow your trainer on what to lift, and how many repetitions you have to do. You have a trainer for a reason, so follow their advice. If you are one of the people who is able to afford a nutritionist, follow the programs that they have designed for you.

I often have people say, “I would love to work with you, but I simply can’t afford it.” The truth is that this is actually rarely the case. What they are actually saying is that they don’t place a high enough priority on their heath to justify my fee. They don’t understand that losing weight is about far more than aesthetics. There are a number of diseases and health conditions that have direct correlation with being obese.

Some health consequences of obesity are:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon cancer)
  • High total Cholesterol and high levels of triglycerides
  • Liver and gallbladder disease
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Respiratory problems
  • Osteoarthritis (the degeneration of cartilage and underlying bone within joint)
  • Reproductive health complications in women (infertility)
  • Mental health conditions

As you can see, aesthetic appeal is simply a bi-product of healthy weight loss; it is not the primary goal. The primary goal is to extend your life and to add to the quality of your life. Just ask a 50-year-old dialysis patient how much fun they are having in their midlife.

Lifestyle

Losing weight in a sustainable manner is not the result of a quick fix. It often requires an overhaul of one’s lifestyle. Losing weight requires changing a few of your routines and that includes what you buy and bring home to the house. It also involves limiting some of your normal daily activities like watching T.V. and how much time you spend online. These sedentary activities wreak havoc on the body’s natural metabolic process. The reason that there was a higher level of fitness just 30 years ago is because people did not spend every waking hour in the house watching T.V. and chatting online. Increasing your level of activity will assist with lipolysis (converting fat into energy), fatty acid oxidation on other highly relevant metabolic processes.

Target Weight

Another common mistake is over optimism. I am a person that believes that anything is possible, but just because something can be achieved does not necessarily mean it will happen within the desired time frame. Make sure that you set an achievable goal so that you can actually get to it. Working with an experienced trainer will allow you to set realistic goals that are not only achievable, but they will also be safe. A trainer will be able to consider all of the relevant variables when helping you set your goals. Your success will depend on a number of things, such as eating habits, genetics, how challenging your workout program is and more, so a clear communication with your trainer is key not only in setting the target weight but on how to achieve it.

No Support System

There are some people who love to claim their self-made status. They like to convince everyone that they did it all on their own; but the truth is that we all need help along the way. Having a strong and consistent support system will make the journey toward fitness and health more manageable and enjoyable. Losing weight is kind of like recovering from an addiction in many ways. You need a strong support system because it is more difficult to do alone. Your family and/or friends can provide you the emotional support that you will need and your trainer will provide the push that you will inevitably need when you get to the point that you are getting tired and think that you cannot go on. If you don’t have people around you that will support and encourage you, then you have some evaluating to do.

There are a number of other impediments that can wreak havoc on weight loss goals, such as stress, hormone imbalances, and dysfunctional liver to start. This will require more attention, and may involve a physician on some level, but all of them can be conquered with the right level of commitment. ~ Dr. Rick Wallace, Ph.D.
